Once your claim is approved, you’ll get the reimbursement via check or direct deposit.
Pay the vet directly: Some insurance companies such as Trupanion and Pets Best always pay the vet directly.
So far as your vet agrees to this form of payment, the insurer pays the vet directly. So you wouldn’t have to pay and wait for reimbursement.
Trupanion insurance has its own claims processing system – Trupanion Express which gives vets the opportunity to submit claims via a web-based system.
Avoiding Claim Payment Surprises:
You have to be familiar with what exactly your plan covers so that you wouldn’t be surprised by the amount of a claims check.
Most Pet insurance typically does not cover 100% of your bills. Make sure you go through your policy for:
- Your reimbursement level: This is like co-insurance for a pet plan. Plans generally pay 70-90 percent of the vet bills (after the deductible)
- Your deductible: Your deductible will be automatically deducted from your first claim of the coverage period
- Coverage maximum: Vet bills over the cap level will not be paid. Always check for the annual cap. You could also get plans that have unlimited annual coverage.
What You’ll Need to File a Claim:
Here is what you generally need to include in your pet insurance claim:
- Claims form: Most insurance companies will require a claims form.
If you are on an online platform such as MyEmbrace from Embrace Pet Insurance, all the information is taken right from your log-in, so you don’t need a separate claims form. - Itemized invoice of the visit: The bill shows all discounts, charges, taxes, and any other fees. Always grab your invoice at the time you pay and make sure it shows a zero-dollar balance.
- Veterinary medical records: For your first claim, you must submit your pet’s medical records. The medical records would help the company identify any condition the pet had before the coverage began.
- Bank routing and account number: If you would like to receive an electronic payment, be sure to submit your bank information.
